The Leeds City Regions BUILD pre-accelerator began this week and will support 20 early stage founders who have business ideas with the potential to solve the issues that matter most to society such as climate change, health and wellbeing, access to education, mobility, sustainable living, and inequality. Founders will benefit from a comprehensive 12 week programme covering a broad range of topics, as well as valuable connections to world-class experts and over 30 of the Leeds City Region’s most successful entrepreneurs.

The Good Growth Hub is launching on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in April 2021. LLDC are working hard with partners, like Newham Council and Workplace, so that local residents can benefit from the career opportunities on and around the Park. The Good Growth Hub will offer a range of high quality career programmes including London Living Wage-paid internships, support for freelances, apprenticeships, careers advice and coaching

Knowledge Quarter Liverpool has launched a new community referral scheme, KQ Reward providing tiered rewards for successful introductions of new customers to KQ Liverpool. Successful advocates receiving up to £500 of gift vouchers (as an individual) or invoiced equivalent (if a business) in return for helping to grow the local business community.

Knowledge Quarter London Partner UCL have developed COVID-19: Online tool that identifies patients at highest risk of deterioration

Sheffield City Region Wins FDI Strategy Award For Advanced Manufacturing. The judges applauded the Sheffield City Region as a leader in advanced manufacturing and materials, benefiting from world-renowned research with the University of Sheffield, the Royce Institute for Research and Innovation of Advanced Materials and the McLaren Composites Technology Centre.

Knowledge Quarter Liverpool has launched a new programme to encourage inward investment. KQ Base is a new soft-landing programme which aims to de-risk inward investment for those companies looking to expand their business presence to the UK market for the first time.

Leeds City Council have launched the Leeds Economic Recovery Framework which sets out Leeds City Council’s continued approach to aid recovery from the coronavirus crisis. It outlines how they are looking to build resilience into the economy, support existing sectors and harness new opportunities, including creating new green jobs as they work towards becoming a Net Zero City by 2030.

Bristol Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus discussion series, Bristol 24/7 Presents, explores Building back fairer, greener, stronger. The panel discussion focuses on how we can build back better and ensure nobody gets left behind, covering issues such as the gender pay gap, living wage, sustainable construction practices and ethical development.

Knowledge Quarter London has launched a new downloadable magazine of educational content, games and creative activities from the Knowledge Quarter called KQ Playground. It features colourful activities from 12 Knowledge Quarter partner organisations, including the British Library, the Royal Veterinary College and the Wellcome Collection

In this end of year Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Podcast, Lyn Garner, the Chief Executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation, not only talks about the achievements of the past year but more importantly looks ahead and focuses on the future, and one that plays a vital role in London's economic and social recovery from coronavirus and lockdown.

A symbol of light has been unveiled on Newcastle Helix. The recently opened Lumen building has had a ‘Halo’ installed across the top of the building. Despite a challenging year, Newcastle Helix has continued to position the region as a test bed for new innovations. It is helping to build the economy around world-leading academic research in fields such as healthy ageing, sustainability, data, and life science and this will play an instrumental role in post Covid-19 recovery, creating jobs for local people.

Glasgow is emerging as a force in advanced manufacturing, technology and culture. A champion of innovation, Glasgow Riverside Innovation District will focus on life sciences, but also nanotech and precision medicine, including medical lasers.

The UKIDG is a network of eight self-defined innovation districts from across the UK including: Glasgow Riverside Innovation District; Knowledge Quarter Liverpool, Leeds Innovation District, Knowledge Quarter London, Belfast Harbour, Bristol Temple Quarter, Newcastle Helix and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. As a group, we aim to make the case for our urban centres and their potential to advance research in areas such as AI, medical sciences and the humanities, while growing the UK’s wider economy. 

Each of our Monthly Digests is dedicated to ensuring that you are kept up to date with the latest thought leadership and research in this area.

BEIS have published their first version of UK Research and Development Roadmap. The government’s Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap sets out the UK’s vision and ambition for science, research and innovation. UK IDG will be submitting a response to inform the final roadmap.

Innovate UK have released a new report, Supporting Diversity and Inclusion in Innovation, which outlines barriers, challenges, opportunities and support needs for minority ethnic groups and disabled people to participate in business innovation.

The Centric Lab have released a podcast: Biological Inequality | Covid19, BAME Communities And Urban Stressors.

DfT and BEIS have committed £350 million to fuel green recovery, announcing the funding is being made available to cut emissions in heavy industry and drive economic recovery from coronavirus.

Bruntwood SciTech have published a report called Place Matters: Innovation And Growth In The UK which identifies innovation districts as a mechanism for inclusive, regional growth across the UK.

Innovate UK’s rolling applications are open for their Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Helping UK businesses to innovate and grow by funding partnerships with researchers and academics.

BEIS have announced Millions could be vaccinated against Covid-19 as UK secures strong portfolio of promising vaccines with the UK securing early access to 90 million doses of promising coronavirus vaccine candidates.

The Centric Lab have published a research paper called, Neuroscience, Urban Regeneration and Urban Health.

Nesta have written an article called Innovation After Lock Down on their blog, exploring how the UK's approach to innovation policy will need to change to kick start and rebuild our stalled economy.

Metro Politics have published an article called Community-Rooted Organisations: Enhanced Accountability and Capacity Building for Community Development.

Earlier this month UK Innovation Districts Group submitted a written response to the BEIS Post-pandemic economic growth working group to aid in the UK’s economic recovery from Covid-19. The submission, focuses on innovation districts and their key place in driving inclusive and sustainable, economic growth. A PDF of the submission can be found here

Knowledge Quarter Liverpool have launched their 5 year strategic vision to power Liverpool’s innovation-led economic recovery plan.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park London is currently running their annual East Summer School on a virtual platform this year on the Olympic Park.
